The Invaluable Nature of Survival Swim Lessons
Survival Swim
Even though drowning remains the leading cause of unintentional death in children aged 1 to 4, it is preventable. But it takes dedication to practice and incorporating specific layers of protection into your everyday life, as well as when in or around water. One of the most effective layers of protection is equipping your children with survival swimming skills and enrolling them in the right kind of swimming lessons.
What Are Survival Swimming Lessons?
Survival swimming is a child’s ability to float and breathe regardless of the water’s depth for an indefinite amount of time. Survival swim means your child, beginning at the age of six months old, can roll-back-to-float position and get themselves to the pool’s edge or staircase where they can get out of the water on their own or wait to be rescued.
It is a specialized skill set that can best be taught by well-trained instructors who will work closely with the child to ensure they build a level of trust and confidence in the water. Once that is established, the child will learn to roll-back-to-float and then begin the swimming process.
The ultimate goal? To not only keep children safe in the water, but to transform them from being completely helpless in the water into confident and capable swimmers.
Why Are Survival Swimming Lessons Important?
Survival swimming has long been an invaluable resource for children as drownings often happen during non-swim times, so the likelihood of an adult being present for rescue is slim. A child needs to be equipped with the skills to get themselves out of dire situations where they’ve found themselves poolside out of curiosity.
Drowning doesn’t always look like you think it would. It’s highly unlikely you’ll hear a child fall into the water, as it is quick and it is silent. There is no flailing around with water splashing everywhere. It can happen within 20 to 60 seconds. People need to understand that real life is not like the movies, and situations like that don’t exist. Because there is no loud fanfare, rescue can be too late.
By enrolling your kids in survival swimming lessons, you’re giving them a tool that empowers them to be able to roll to their back into a floating position and get themselves to a wall or stairs to get out, or to be in a floating position until they are taken out of the water. And the good news is that learning to swim can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent.
