Kathleen McMordie, founder of Texas Swim Academy, recently took on what could have been the daunting task of completing her first half marathon. However, with proper training and preparation, Kathleen was able to complete her first half marathon this past January – achieving a personal goal she set for herself back in 2016.

“I started becoming interested in bone health and maintaining mobility and strength after doing some research on the aging process,” says Kathleen. “I also wanted to be in better shape.”

Her fitness plan began with working out two times a week with a focus on strength training and nutrition. Once she started to lose weight, she took up running, and at the beginning of 2016 Kathleen decided she wanted to run a half marathon in 2017.

With an end goal in mind, Kathleen began to focus on the proper nutrition needed for running, while building speed and endurance.

“I did a three-day-a-week running plan that gradually increased the distance I ran,” she says. “I worked on form and learning to run properly to prevent injuries.”

Come race day, Kathleen had a wonderful time and soaked up the vibes from the energetic crowd.

“I was proud to finish the race,” she says, “and I’m very glad that I trained and prepared for it. Start with small achievable goals and move on from there. You can meet any goal you set your mind to if you put in the effort.”
